Since I have just started this blog, I owe a few explanations to my readers.
First of all, the name. "S," of course, stands for socialism. The reason I don't just call my blog "Socialism" is that firstly, that would be boring. Secondly, the name satirically refers to the negative attitude of the American public towards the word "socalism" or "socialist." Many people shun the idea of socialism, even though they may not even understand the concept or meaning, just because society has told them that socialism is evil and taboo.
I also need to clarify my main positions in politics. No, I am not a Communist. Communism is an extreme form of socialism, but I believe that while it seems to be utopian, it is in fact slightly unfair and impractical. It goes too far against human nature and is easily manipulated by those seeking power. For these reasons I am a democratic socialist. A democratic socialist, in general definition (as there are many variations), believes in the institution of social programs by democratic means. Examples can be found in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Venezuela, and other countries.
Below is a brief summary of my political positions.
Nationalization?
To an extent. Large industries, such as oil, energy utilities, banks, insurance companies, and car manufacturers should be bought by the government for fair compensation and controlled through democracy by the citizens.
Environment?
Global warming and pollution of the environment are the biggest problems the world faces today. All possible steps must be taken immediately to prevent further environmental damage.
Healthcare?
Universal, government-sponsored healthcare available to applicants who can prove they are using no harmful substances or are willing to enroll in government-sponsored rehab programs.
Immigration?
The only way to prevent illegal immigration is to provide economic aid to the countries or immigrants' origin. A fence will not work. Amnesty should be offered to illegal immigrants periodically.
Presidential choice for 2009?
Barack Obama. Definitely.
Gun Control?
The second amendment should be removed from the constitution. All guns except small-caliber hunting guns should be outlawed, especially handguns. Extensive background checks should be given to any buyers of hunting guns.
Iraq?
We made the mess in Iraq, and now we have to clean it up. However, it is necessary to begin weaning Iraq from America's troops immediately.
Gas prices?
High gas prices are, in fact, beneficial to this country. Gas prices cause people to be more economical, helping to avert the near-future climate change and pollution catastrophe. There will be more on this issue later.
